After living my first 20 years in the suburbs of NYC, I decided I needed a change from this high stress environment. During a trip out west to check out colleges, I quickly discovered and fell in love with the unique climate and lifestyle that Tucson offers. I graduated from the University of Arizona, found my soulmate, and raised a family in this small desert oasis.
Today I continue my 20-plus-years career in print media. As for the future, I believe in making every day count. I look forward to continuing to discover the potential of my two passions: photography and cycling.
Why I love to make photographs...
When I create an image that goes beyond recording a moment in time, its easy to gain a sense of accomplishment. You create something that's greater then the sum of its parts, and this new, wonderful image can stir your soul. As my understanding of photography grows, the opportunity to create images that help us view the world from exciting new perspectives is uncovered.
Why I love cycling...
At about the same time I discovered digital photography, I also was introduced to the sport of road cycling. Being active in sports most of my life, I was ready for some new athletic challenges. After investing in an entry level Trek, I soon found myself participating in local group rides, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It became clear to me that this was not just another physical activity to help maintain a healthy heart. There is just something about being on the bike, and sharing the experience with others. After my first paceline ride, I was hooked. Anyone who has danced on the pedals knows that cycling offers a powerful mind/body experience. As my interest in cycling grew, so did my attention to detail of the desert landscape. Whether you're screaming down a hill at 30mph, gliding over the flats or out of the saddle on a steep grade, this sport gives you a special feeling for your surroundings. This greater visual appreciation helped nuture my passion for photography. So it should come as no surprise that the idea for Desert Journeys surfaced during a solo ride on one of the most beautiful and inspiring places Tucson has to offer; The Saguaro National Monument East 8 mile loop.
Desert Journeys has been a labor of love. I hope this guide helps motivate you to get out there and enjoy all that Tucson road cycling has to offer.
Enjoy! |
